The pieces shown in the volume from the collections of the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra (Italian Historical War Museum) in Rovereto and other public and private collections
illustrate the clothing of the classical troops (infantry, grenadieri, alpini, bersaglieri, artillery, cavalry, carabinieri, financial guard , engineer troop, medical and supply troops)
as well as those of the new troop branches, the emergence of which modern war brought with it (mortar troop, machine gun troop, Arditi, aviation troop).
They also give a comprehensive picture of the various special formations attached to the Italian army, with a particular focus on those of the volunteers (Garibaldini, cyclist and automobile corps, Czechoslovakian legionnaires, irredentist volunteers in the „Far East“).
The richly illustrated book describes uniforms, caps and steel helmets and shows all samples of the army’s field uniforms –
from the time the new clothing was introduced until the end of the war.
Contemporary black and white photos illustrate how the garments were worn in action.
In addition, this double volume contains numerous short biographies and legacies of important personalities such as Luigi Cadorna, Armando Diaz, Gabriele d’Annunzio, Cesare Battisti, Damiano Chiesa, Fabio Filzi, Ettore Lajolo, the Calvi brothers, or troop units such as the 87th Airman Squadron „Serenissima“, which flew over enemy Vienna in a daring action in August 1918.
Based on the mostly unpublished archive material and the collections, the readership is given a realistic picture of the composition and uniforms of the Italian army during the war, but also of the deficits in its equipment and their further development.
